“Denim and Cider” Celebration

Will Coronate

Moses H. Cone as the Denim King

BLOWING ROCK N.C. – The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is collaborating with the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, the Blowing Rock Historical Society and Appalachian State University to host “Denim and Cider”, a celebration which includes an evening reception and world premier performance of Moses Cone: The Denim King on Saturday, June 2.  Tickets for “Denim and Cider” include the reception and are $40 per person.

Commissioned by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, Moses Cone: The Denim King tells the story of Moses Cone, a denim magnate in North Carolina who established Flat Top Manor in Blowing Rock as a retreat, encompassing vast fields, orchards and forests for wandering, a bass lake and a trout lake, stables and miles of carriage trails.

Based on the book Mansion in the Mountains by Philip Noblitt, retired National Park Service information officer for the Blue Ridge Parkway, the script was written by Dr. Janet Barton Speer of Lees-McRae College in Lenoir; the music and lyrics were composed by Jonathan Thomas Oaks.  Moses Cone: The Denim King will be directed by Kenneth Kay, producing artistic director for the Blowing Rock Stage Company, and performed by a cast of more than twenty actors and musicians with period costumes and sets.

The Cone story, entwined in the history of Blowing Rock and North Carolina’s Piedmont, provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the shared history of the Piedmont and the High Country and to encourage stewardship of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Lodging is available at several Blowing Rock inns, bed & breakfasts and resorts.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is an independent non-profit and the primary and professional fundraising organization for the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The Foundation promotes stewardship of the Blue Ridge Parkway and, among its programs, maintains two endowments that support projects at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park and maintenance of the estate’s carriage trails.  For more information on this event or to purchase tickets, visit
