Happy 20th anniversary! We got here because of you. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation started as a simple idea: Give the people who care deeply for this awe-inspiring park the power to protect and guide its future. Whether you cherished the trails, scenery, ties to mountain history and culture, wildlife, or just the drive itself, we invited you to join our Community of Stewards. The response was overwhelming. Because of your commitment, we have raised more than $12 million for the Blue Ridge Parkway in the last 20 years!
From our first project on the Blue Ridge Parkway, building the Visitor Center at Waterrock Knob, to the recently completed repairs of historic structures at the Peaks of Otter recreation area, you are the driving force behind our work. Through gifts, feedback, and ideas your vision for the Parkway can be seen along all 469 miles. We thank you. Millions of visitors each year thank you. The Parkway thanks you.
You have collectively contributed more than $12 million to:
- Protect natural resources through wildlife surveys, trail repairs, environmental studies, forensic training for law enforcement rangers, and more
- Expand education and outreach by introducing young park stewards to the outdoors through the Kids in Parks program, rehabbing museum and visitor center exhibits, funding youth conservation crews, engaging in citizen science projects, and more
- Preserve history and culture by placing Moses H. Cone Memorial Park on the National Register of Historic Places, supporting musical programming at the Blue Ridge Music Center, rehabbing Mabry Mill, Ramsey Cabin, and more
- Enhance visitor amenities and experiences at stops up and down the Parkway, including Waterrock Knob, Graveyard Fields, Bass Lake, Price Lake, Linville Falls, Doughton Park, Abbott Lake, and many more locations
Now, 20 years later, you are still making a lasting impact on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This year, we will reflect on all the support that led us to this great milestone, but even more time will be spent looking to the future.
We know you will join us to:
- Reopen the Bluffs buildings at Doughton Park
- Restore the former glory to Flat Top Manor and the grounds at Moses H. Cone Memorial Park
- Create our new Volunteer Corps to help maintain trails, plan events, and spread the word about the Foundation
- Share the story of your personal connection to the Blue Ridge Parkway
- and give back to the Blue Ridge Parkway in honor of our 20th anniversary!
There is so much good work ahead, and we are grateful to have you on this journey with us as it winds toward a brighter horizon.
